For maintenance personnel, when original membrane switches for older equipment are unavailable, they can record the wire numbers corresponding to each key and then replace them with standard push-button switches (tactile switches) connected via wiring groups. This approach achieves exactly the same functionality but requires more effort.

The lifespan of a membrane switch can exceed one million cycles. This exceptionally long durability is attributed to the fact that the switch's actuation mechanism relies on the vertical deflection of an elastic membrane. The reason the elastic membrane can withstand millions of flexing cycles lies in its minimal displacement—only 0.1 to 0.3 mm (corresponding to the switch travel)—combined with the rational selection of materials, which ensures that the membrane remains well below its yield limit. As a result, the membrane material can endure over one million cycles of use without undergoing permanent deformation.
In addition to requiring flatness and printability, the materials used for membrane switches and panels must primarily exhibit flexibility and high elasticity.
Classification of Membrane Switches Membrane switches can be classified into two main categories based on either the usage environment or the circuit substrate. According to the environmental classification, they are divided into two major types: commercial membrane switches and military-grade membrane panel switches. Alternatively, when categorized by circuit substrate—that is, by the method of circuit formation—they can be further divided into two primary types: conductive ink-printed circuits and copper-clad laminate etched circuits.
There are many types of plastic films used in membrane panel switches, such as PC film. Typically, these films are produced from granular materials using either extrusion or calendering processes. PC film boasts excellent impact resistance, making it suitable for applications like vests. It also offers good hardness, though its bending performance and processability are somewhat limited.
