This type of switch is referred to as "flexible" because its mask layer, isolation layer, and circuit layer are all composed of flexible films with distinct properties. The circuit layer of the flexible membrane switch utilizes high-performance polyester film (PET) as the substrate for the switch circuit pattern.

It falls under the category of contact switches and features a flat, multi-layered, sealed structure. This innovative design integrates key-switch functionality with panel function markings, transparent windows for display readability, indicator window openings, and an integrated circuit system into a single, cohesive electronic control assembly.
The standard flat membrane switch consists of upper and lower circuit layers, an insulating isolation layer, and optionally, a panel graphic print. When the panel is pressed against the upper circuit layer, the upper circuit penetrates the isolation layer and makes contact with the lower circuit. The resulting electronic connection (signal) can be designed according to the specific requirements of various applications.
