I. Basic Structure Thin-film switch How it works
The membrane switch sounds quite professional. In fact, what’s more popular are panel buttons—this name is already familiar to many. Numerous device control panels rely on membrane switches, which are widely used in electronic communications and measurement applications across various fields, including instrumentation, industrial control, medical equipment, the automotive industry, smart toys, and household appliances.

Principle of Thin-Film Switches - Introduction
A薄膜 switch is a multi-layered (planar, non-locking) type of button switch composed of several elastic insulating material layers. It integrates both the button mechanism and the command elements into a single unit, often combined with instrument panels and other functional components. The operation of the薄膜 switch relies solely on the vertical movement of its elastic membrane. Despite undergoing millions of actuations—each with minimal displacement ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 mm—and despite the reasonable selection of materials, the membrane material remains highly durable, capable of sustaining over a million cycles without deformation. This exceptional longevity directly contributes to the outstanding durability and reliability of the薄膜 switch.
The membrane switch features an elegant appearance, long service life, a simple structure, easy installation, excellent tactile feedback, and a compact footprint. They are widely used across various industries, ranging from household appliances to cutting-edge high-tech products. Gradually replacing certain segments of the tactile switch market, they have captured a significant share of the global market.
Thin-film switch Other categories:
(1) Classified by circuit substrate into flexible boards and rigid boards;
(2) Classified by panel shape into flat-type or three-dimensional type;
(3) Classified by operational experience into seamless and perceptible types;
(4) Classified by special purpose into transparent type and touch-sensitive film screen type;
(5) Thin-film panel switches are classified into integrated types and separate components, as well as keycaps combined with keyboards.
Characteristics of membrane switches:
(1) Durability
The switch boasts a service life of over one million cycles. This exceptionally long lifespan is attributed to the switching mechanism, which relies on the elastic membrane's vertical bouncing motion. The membrane's ability to endure millions of cycles stems from its minimal deformation—only 0.1 to 0.3 mm (corresponding to the actuation stroke)—while the material selection ensures that the stress levels remain well below the membrane's yield limit. As a result, the thin-film material can reliably withstand more than one million operational cycles without experiencing permanent deformation.
From another important perspective, the switch contacts achieve vertical contact, resulting in minimal wear. In contrast, the contacts produced via screen printing can form a sufficiently thick layer, and an additional conductive carbon layer is applied on top of the silver paste contacts to enhance wear resistance and provide self-lubrication. Consequently, the operational lifespan of film-based switches equipped with these advanced contacts surpasses that of mechanical-contact control switches by more than tens of times.
(2) Excellent sealing performance
Due to Thin-film switch It features an integral sealing structure, ensuring that the switch contacts are protected from corrosive harmful gases and resistant to oxidation. Additionally, it boasts excellent water- and dust-proof capabilities, making it ideally suited for use in a wide range of harsh environments.
