Plastic substrates with a thickness of 0.25 mm or less are referred to as films, primarily used as the panel layer in membrane switches. The back side of these films is printed with various indicative patterns and text to clearly mark the operational areas corresponding to each key position. The choice of film thickness should be determined based on the size of the panel and the keys themselves: thicker materials increase actuation force but may lead to sluggish response, while excessively thin materials can result in poor tactile feedback during operation and insufficient rebound. Substrates exceeding 0.25 mm in thickness are classified as sheets, which are not suitable for forming three-dimensional keys. Instead, they can serve as non-keyed indicator panels or be utilized as backing plates for membrane switches to enhance their overall rigidity.

The panel layer is typically produced by screen-printing exquisite patterns and text onto colorless, transparent sheet materials such as PET or PC with a thickness below 0.25 mm. Since the primary function of the panel layer is to serve as an identification and button component, the selected materials must exhibit high transparency, excellent ink adhesion, superior elasticity, and exceptional toughness.
The primary function of the face adhesive is to firmly bond the panel layer with the circuit layer, ensuring both sealing and electrical connection. Typically, this layer requires a thickness between 0.05 and 0.15 mm, while also possessing high adhesion strength and excellent resistance to aging. During production, specialized double-sided adhesive films for membrane switches are commonly used. Some membrane switch applications demand waterproof and high-temperature-resistant properties; therefore, the face adhesive must be selected based on specific requirements, utilizing materials with tailored characteristics as needed.

This layer utilizes high-performance polyester film (PET) as the substrate for the switch circuitry, onto which conductive silver paste and conductive carbon paste are precisely screen-printed using specialized techniques, thereby imparting electrical conductivity. The typical thickness of this layer ranges from 0.05 to 0.175 mm, with 0.125 mm PET being the most commonly used material.

It serves as a sealing and connecting component positioned between the upper and lower circuit layers, typically using PET double-sided adhesive with thicknesses ranging from 0.05 to 0.2 mm. When selecting the material for this layer, it is essential to carefully consider the overall product thickness, insulation properties, tactile feel of the circuit buttons, and sealing performance.
